~Zeke of the Week~

The 'Zeke of the Week' title is appointed to those who have shown exemplary character and commitment in their community.

Our Zeke of the Week is ...

The Mexican American Council

In 1990 a concerned group of locals came together with one idea in mind. Their goal was to address the disparities regarding injustice and discrimination of the local Mexican community. Together they established the non-profit organization called The Mexican American Council of Saginaw. Their mission was to establish a center for programs and at-risk individuals, including providing positive alternatives to substance abuse, providing education in job skills, and to assist in finding employment for those in need.

Some of their more recent accomplishments include establishing the Latino Leaders for the Enhancement of Advocacy & Development program. They have also fostered strong ties to the community and developed open doors with relationships with both State and Local government representatives. One of their most prominent achievements is the continued success of the Latino after school kids art program. The Mexican American Council has great plans for the future to encourage completion of education and employment, unity with other local non-profit organizations. With special thanks to the following Bobby DeLeon - President,  Andrea Lopez - Vice President,  Sarah Torres - Secretary,  Irma DeLeon - Board Member,  Trinidad Cirilo Jr. - Board Member,  Beatriz Lopez - Fundraiser Coordinator, and Elizabeth Estrada - Education Coordinator.

Join us in reading and discussing Octavia Butler’s Kindred, a timely, provocative read when it was first published in 1979—and now, in the aftermath of the recent BLM movement in our country, even more so.

Can a novel shed light on the relationship between the past and the present, the legacy of slavery in America, and the power of one individual’s story? And can this novel, and our conversations about it, inform our choices going forward?
Those are some of the questions we’ll pose in our Community Read through the months of January and February. Please join us and add your voice to our discussion.

Kindred is available in both its original (novel) form and as a graphic novel by Daiman Duffy, created in 2017.Pick up a free copy of either version of this book at any of the Saginaw Public Library branches through December 2020.
